On Friday, November 23, 2018, the Mayor of Athens, Greece, Mr. Georgios Kaminis visited the Neorion Syros Shipyards, Greece. In the shipyards’ facilities he had the chance to meet and discuss with the General Manager of the plant, Mr. Vasilis Savvidis, the Director of Administrative and Financial Operations, Mr. Yannis Perlepes, the Administration of the Workers’ Association, Mr. Antonis Hadjantonis, President and Mr. Markos Rigoutsos, General Secretary and other executives.
The First Citizen of Athens was briefed on developments of the historic shipyard and expressed his satisfaction for its revival and for the future that is hopeful and promising under ONEX SHIPYARDS management.
Since last spring, 40 ships have been repaired in Neorion, thanks to the growth of demand and confidence that they have shown the Greek ship owners to the craftsmanship of the workers of Syros. By this way Neorion Syros Shipyards in this new era, are a catalyst for the revitalization of the economy of the island of Syros, the Greek economy in general and confront the chronic unemployment and immigration of many skilled shipbuilders.
Finally, Mr. Kaminis was impressed and satisfied by the environmental improvements and interventions. On one hand, the steps that have been made to replace sandblasting by modern waterblasting methods have changed the status completely and on the other hand, the gradual removal of the tens of thousands of tons of sand blasting waste that were piled for decades in the yard. It is worth mentioning that the company’s goals are the gradual transformation of the yard into a “green shipyard” with full recycling, the use of new technologies and an intelligent energy management.
